Keep Afloat With Marine Safety Agencies

Today's Safety Sunday Tip is: Keep Afloat with Marine Safety Agencies

The maritime industry is vast in the scope of work performed within it. This work includes the construction, repair, and scrapping of vessels. In our specific line of business, we handle a variety of subsectors, including husbandry services, crew change services, project management, customs brokerage, chartering services, trucking, and of course, what we do best"- the movement of cargo and materials. The list goes on and on…

So, when it comes to personnel safety, mainly yours, we find ample hazards on the job. These hazards include slips, trips, falls, pinch points, dropped objects, machinery and equipment hazards, hazardous chemicals, confined/enclosed spaces, and fire hazards, just to name a few! Implementing control measures, procedures, and training helps raise awareness of potential dangers and ways to keep our employees safe.

To help with the mitigation (or the recognition of hazards) OSHA formed MACOSH (Marine Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety & Health). MACOSH was formed in 1995 as a discretionary advisory committee authorized by Section 7(b) of the OSH Act (29 U.S.C. § 656) to advise, consult with, and make recommendations to the Secretary of Labor on matters relating to the maritime industry. It was preceded by the Shipyard Employment Standards Advisory Committee, which advises OSHA on shipyard issues from 1988 to 1995. The Committee name was changed to reflect a broader charter that includes all OSHA-related maritime matters, including those in cargo-handling operations.

I tell you all this information so that as an employee, you are keenly mindful that our industry and the Compliance & QHSE Department at GMC are working diligently to keep injuries, illnesses, and fatalities from ever occurring. Hence, our objective …GOAL ZERO!
